Feast of St. Vartan the General

On February 12, the Armenian Apostolic Church commemorated the Feast of St. Vartan the General, the Holy Ghevontian (Levonian) Clergy, and the 1,036 martyrs.

On this occasion, at St. Vartan Armenian Apostolic Church of British Columbia, the Divine and Immortal Liturgy dedicated to the Holy Vartanants and Holy Ghevontiants was celebrated under the presidency of His Grace Bishop Abgar Hovakimyan, Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Canada. The celebrant was the Very Rev. Archpriest Fr. Zareh Zargarian, Diocesan Vicar and Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Armenian Church of Toronto.

Hierarchs of the Canadian Diocese, clergy, and members of the faithful were in attendance. In his sermon, the Celebrant reflected on the meaning of the feast, noting: “The Feast of the Holy Vartanants and Holy Ghevontiants is one of those rare days when history and faith unite in a single testimony. The Persian king sought to erase the spiritual identity of the Armenian people, compelling them to renounce the Holy Cross and the Holy Gospel. Yet the Armenian people understood that if they were to lose their faith, they would also lose their identity, their calling, and their future.”

Addressing the faithful, he encouraged all to draw strength from the example of the Holy Vartanants and Holy Ghevontiants, to remain steadfast in faith, to love the Homeland and the Church, and to stay faithful to God in every trial. On behalf of the clergy and the faithful, he also conveyed congratulations to His Holiness on the occasion of his name day.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, a Pontifical Prayer (Hayrabedakan Maghtank) was offered under the presidency of Bishop Abgar Hovakimyan. The clergy and faithful raised prayers to God for the steadfastness and enduring radiance of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, and for the long life and fruitful pontificate of His Holiness.
